Best Refrigerator Water Filters (2026): Which Ones Remove Lead and PFAS

Your fridge decides which filter fits, so the real question is which version to buy. Most genuine filters are certified for lead. Only a few are certified for PFAS. And compatible filters range from NSF-listed for lead to chlorine taste only, depending on a few letters in the model number.

Key takeaways

  • For PFAS, GE XWFE and EveryDrop Filter 3 are the genuine filters we found with a PFOA/PFOS certification.
  • Compatible filters can be fine, but only specific versions are certified for lead. With Waterdrop, it's the WDP and WDS models.
  • Avoid counterfeits. Appliance makers report fake filters that failed to remove lead. Buy from the brand or a trusted seller.
  • Change the filter every 6 months or at its rated gallons, whichever comes first.

Whirlpool and Samsung rows are from NSF's public listings.[1][2][3] GE filters are certified by IAPMO R&T according to GE's data sheets.[4][5] LG claims NSF certification for the LT1000P and LT700P, but we couldn't find them in NSF's directory.[6]

Genuine or compatible?

Compatible filters cost less, and some are genuinely certified. NSF lists dozens of Waterdrop fridge filters under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, but only the WDP and WDS versions. The plain WD versions are certified for chlorine taste and odor only, and none list PFAS.[7] The same is true for several store brands: the suffix on the model number decides what's certified. Look up the exact model before you buy.

Two exceptions. Many newer GE fridges read a chip in the filter and may refuse to dispense water with a non-GE or expired filter.[8] And counterfeits are common. AHAM, the appliance makers' trade group, says fake filters it tested failed to remove lead and cysts, and some added contaminants.[9]

Our picks

Best for PFAS

GE XWFE filter

Refrigerator filter for many GE fridges

The fridge filter with a PFAS certification: lead and PFOA/PFOS in one.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401NSF/ANSI P473

The genuine filter for many Whirlpool-family fridges, NSF-listed for lead.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401

  • Genuine filter: no fit or counterfeit worries when bought from a trusted seller
  • Also certified under NSF/ANSI 401 for some emerging contaminants
  • Not certified for PFAS
  • Costs more than compatible filters

If your Whirlpool-family fridge takes Filter 3, that version is also NSF-listed for PFOA/PFOS.[2]

Best for Samsung fridges

Samsung HAF-QIN filter

Refrigerator filter for many recent Samsung fridges

Samsung owners who want the genuine, NSF-listed lead-reducing filter.

A cheaper compatible filter that's still NSF-listed for lead, if you buy the WDP or WDS version.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42

Lead: WDP and WDS models are NSF-listed for lead; plain WD models are chlorine-taste only. No PFOA/PFOS claim. Certified by NSF. See the evidence.

  • Usually cheaper than the genuine filter
  • Lead certification you can check in NSF's directory
  • Only the WDP/WDS versions carry the lead claim. Check the model number
  • Not certified for PFAS

Is a fridge filter enough?

For lead, a certified fridge filter works for the water and ice it dispenses. It doesn't help water from your kitchen tap, which you probably use for cooking. If lead or PFAS is a real concern, an under-sink filter covers both. Not sure? Test your water first.

Frequently asked questions

Do refrigerator filters remove lead?

Most genuine filters from Whirlpool (EveryDrop), Samsung and GE are certified for lead. Compatible filters vary: check the exact model in NSF's listings.

Do refrigerator filters remove PFAS?

A few do. GE XWFE and EveryDrop Filter 3 are certified for PFOA and PFOS. Most other fridge filters, genuine or compatible, are not.

Are off-brand fridge filters safe?

Some are NSF-certified for lead, like Waterdrop's WDP and WDS models. Others are certified only for chlorine taste, and counterfeits can fail entirely. Buy a model you can find in NSF's listings, from a trusted seller.

How often should I change my fridge filter?

Every 6 months, or sooner if you reach its rated gallons. A filter past its life stops doing its job.
