Best Water Filters for PFAS (2026): 5 Certified Picks

Every filter below is certified to reduce PFOA and PFOS, the two PFAS chemicals the EPA limits to 4 parts per trillion. We picked one for each kind of household, from renters with a pitcher to homeowners ready to install reverse osmosis.

Key takeaways

  • Best overall: a reverse osmosis system. In the Duke and NC State study, under-sink RO removed 94% or more of PFAS.
  • No plumbing? AquaTru's countertop RO plugs in and goes.
  • Tightest budget: the blue Brita Elite cartridge is certified for PFOA/PFOS. The standard white Brita filter is not.
  • Whatever you buy, replace the filter on schedule. An overdue filter can release what it captured.

How we picked

We only included filters whose PFOA/PFOS reduction appears in an accredited certifier's listing (IAPMO R&T or WQA) or in the manufacturer's published performance data sheet, which we link from each card. We have not yet tested these filters ourselves. We also weighted toward reverse osmosis, because it was the most consistent technology in independent real-world testing.[1]

The EPA's limit for PFOA and PFOS in tap water is 4 ppt each. A 2026 proposal would keep those limits but give utilities until 2031 to comply.[2] If your water report shows PFAS, a home filter is the fastest fix you control.

Best overall: under-sink reverse osmosis

Best overall

Waterdrop G3P800

Under-sink tankless reverse osmosis

Whole-family drinking water with the strongest PFAS reduction.

NSF/ANSI 58NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401NSF/ANSI 372

PFAS: Performance data sheet shows PFOA and PFOS reduced from about 3 ppb to below 0.01 ppb. Certified by IAPMO R&T. See the evidence.

  • Tankless design saves cabinet space
  • Fast flow from a dedicated faucet
  • Needs a drain connection and an outlet under the sink
  • Sends some water to the drain, like all RO

Reverse osmosis is the most reliable way to cut PFAS at home. It also reduces dissolved solids, nitrate and many metals. Tankless designs like the G3P800 fit in cabinets that can't take a storage tank. Check that you have space, an outlet and a drain line under the sink before ordering.

Best without plumbing: countertop reverse osmosis

Best for renters

AquaTru Classic

Countertop reverse osmosis

PFAS reduction without plumbing work. Good for renters.

NSF/ANSI 58NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401NSF/ANSI 372

PFAS: PFOA and PFOS reduction listed under NSF/ANSI 53. Certified by IAPMO R&T. See the evidence.

  • No installation: fill the tank and plug it in
  • Broad certification list, including RO-level reduction
  • Takes counter space
  • Filling and emptying tanks by hand

You get RO-level reduction without touching your pipes. The trade-off is convenience: you fill the tap-water tank by hand and empty the reject water occasionally.

Best under-sink carbon: no wastewater

Best no-waste option

Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage

Under-sink carbon filter

PFAS and lead reduction with no wastewater and simple installation.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401

PFAS: PFOA and PFOS reduction certified under NSF/ANSI 53. Certified by WQA. See the evidence.

  • No water sent to the drain
  • Filters last up to 600 gallons or 6 months
  • Doesn't reduce dissolved solids, nitrate or fluoride like RO does

A good pick if PFAS and lead are your main concerns and you don't want RO's drain connection or water use. Carbon is less consistent than RO across all PFAS types, so this one's certification matters. Change the filters on time.

Best pitchers

Best pitcher

ZeroWater pitcher (5-stage filter)

Pitcher with ion-exchange filter

PFAS, lead and chromium reduction in a pitcher, plus a TDS meter.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42

PFAS: PFOA and PFOS reduced 99.8% in certification testing under NSF/ANSI 53. Certified by IAPMO R&T. See the evidence.

  • Also certified for lead and chromium
  • TDS meter in the box
  • Rated for only 15 gallons, and life is shorter in water with high dissolved solids
  • Some people dislike the taste of mineral-free water

Best budget

Brita Elite filter (in any Brita pitcher)

Pitcher cartridge

The cheapest certified PFAS option if you already own a Brita pitcher.

NSF/ANSI 53NSF/ANSI 42NSF/ANSI 401

PFAS: PFOA and PFOS reduction certified under NSF/ANSI 53, 98.1% in testing. Certified by IAPMO R&T (PFOA/PFOS), WQA (other claims). See the evidence.

  • Fits standard Brita pitchers and dispensers
  • Rated for 120 gallons, about 6 months
  • Slow, small batches
  • PFOA/PFOS and microplastics claims apply only to the pitcher models listed on the data sheet
  • The white Brita Original (Standard) filter is not certified for lead or PFAS. Buy the blue Elite.

Pitchers are the cheapest way in, but they're slow and need frequent cartridge changes. In the Duke and NC State study, carbon pitcher filters as a group were inconsistent for PFAS.[1] That's why we only list cartridges with a PFOA/PFOS certification.

What not to buy for PFAS

  • Whole-house carbon systems as your only PFAS treatment. In the study, PFAS rose after filtration in 4 of 6 systems tested.[1]
  • Any filter marketed as “tested to” a standard without an actual certification listing.
  • Water ionizers. Changing pH does nothing for PFAS. See our alkaline water guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does a regular Brita filter remove PFAS?

The standard white Brita pitcher filter is not certified for PFAS. The blue Brita Elite filter is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS reduction.

Is reverse osmosis worth it just for PFAS?

If your water report shows PFAS well above 4 ppt, yes. RO was the most consistent technology in independent testing and also handles other contaminants a carbon filter can't.

How often should I change a PFAS filter?

At or before the rated capacity on the certification listing. For example, Brita Elite is rated for 120 gallons, about six months. Write the install date on the filter.
